I can think of multiple uses for Centaur-Justification. For example, here is ‘The Tyger’ by William Blake, as a centaur. Some loss of quality in posting to Tumblr but you get the idea:

Joanna Newsom- ‘Have One On Me’… In my opinion, this quote from one of the guys in Daft Punk explains the difference between how Joanna Newsom creates Pop Music, and how everyone else does it: ““A cello was there 400 years ago and will still be here in 400 years, but synthesisers that were invented 20 years ago will probably be gone in the next 20. Synths are a very low level of artificial intelligence. Whereas you have a Stradivarius that will live for a thousand years.”
Kanye West- ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’… Some of the very best musicians of all time have been tremendous, egotistical jackasses whose worldviews are patently absurd and borderline offensive, but whose music is undeniably brilliant. Kanye West is one of those jackasses.
Titus Andronicus- ‘The Monitor’… The smartest rock album of the year, also the scuzziest. Punk’s not dead, it just defended its Liberal Studies thesis comparing Civil War literature to postmodern and contemporary depictions of the suburban American male. (Also further proof that no one hates new jersey more than the people who live there)
Sufjan Stevens- ‘Age of Adz’… I didn’t think someone would make an electronic pop record that does the same thing as the Postal Service, but better and with more emotional depth. I also didn’t think that better electronic pop record would have songs averaging 8 minutes in length. I definitely didn’t think it would be created by Sufjan Stevens, but in retrospect it makes perfect sense
Beach House- Teen Dream
Flying Lotus- Cosmogramma
Four Tet- There is Love In You
Janelle Monae- The ArchAndroid
Broken Social Scene- Forgiveness Rock Record
Childish Gambino- I Am Just A Rapper mixtape
Yeasayer- Odd Blood
Albums I Will Probably Like A Lot in A Few Months When I’ve Listened To Them More
The Tallest Man On Earth- The Wild Hunt
Dessa- A Badly Broken Code
Robyn- Body Talk
Sharon Van Etten- Epic
Owen Pallett- Heartland
The Roots- How I Got Over
Big Boi- Sir Lucious Leftfoot- The Son of Chico Dusty
Walkmen- Lisbon
Swans- My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky
Albums Whose Acclaim I Do Not Understand
Gorillaz- Plastic Beach
Arcade Fire- The Suburbs
Waaves, Best Coast, or Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti (seriously… ‘Round and Round’ is an obnoxious song, Pitchfork. Get over yourself)
While we’re on the topic, let’s just all agree that lo-fi isn’t actually a ‘quality,’ rather, it is the absence thereof. If diminishing fidelity is the only way to improve your music, then your music probably doesn’t need to be released in the first place.
WTF Award
Given to the most unforgettable album I will only ever listen to once:
Community- Simply put, the best thing about owning a TV in 2010. I have not enjoyed a TV show this much since season 2 of 30 Rock, or Season 2 of Arrested Development, and often Community is smarter than either of those shows at their best.
Mad Men- Sally Draper should get all the emmys ever made. I spent most of the season frustrated by how hamfisted things were getting, and the season kept building and building to a moment that never actually happened. But hell, I’m a white 20-something educated liberal male and of course I am going to include this show high on my list
Rubicon- Started the season as the slowest paced conspiracy show ever, and I almost just stopped watching out of boredom. Then, out of nowhere, it all but ditched the conspiracy and perfectly encapsulated the past 10 years of American politics in a character-driven drama that, for a few episodes, was even better than Mad Men.
Archer- I haven’t seen a single new Adult Swim cartoon in maybe 5 years, but if any of them are anywhere near as good as this I bet they’d be on my list too.
Baseball- Even with Cliff Lee wearing pinstripes again in 2011, I am convinced I will never again witness a baseball season as fascinating, frustrating, and mind-blowing as 2010.
Honorable Mentions
Justified had the most amazing pilot of the year, and like The Walking Dead it promptly failed to deliver on the best aspects of that pilot. Of the two, Justified is the better show. And while there were no pick-axes to skulls, Food Party edged out The Walking Dead for ‘WTF?’-itude; if I try to describe it to anyone it sounds like I’m just talking about a dream I had but I swear this is a real show that comes on TV. While FX and AMC battle out to be ‘the tv network you should watch at least 3 hours a week,’ IFC has quietly become the TV channel I am guaranteed to always enjoy. Modern Family deserves all the praise that has been lavished on it, and while The Office, 30 Rock and How I Met Your Mother are all shadows of their former selves they each have come out of dreary seasons last year to vie for ‘most improved’ based on the first half of this season.
Things I probably should have watched at some point:
Breaking Bad, Terriers, Louie, Parks and Recreation, Lost, Fringe
Things I was really passionate/excited about at various parts of the year but ultimately just stopped caring about:
Conan, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Top Chef
Things I watch and get really into but only because my wife DVR’s them:
